Holding space for grief
Great Salt Lake’s decline and polycrisis bring up intense emotions in all of us, including grief, fear, uncertainty, and overwhelm. We rarely have opportunities to talk about these emotions or process them as a community. Theorists like Joanna Macy and practitioners like Kritee Kanko teach us that it is vital to hold space for these emotions in order to keep our movements healthy, especially in the context of ecological collapse.
We hold grief circles to reconnect with our bodies and with this place so that we can return to our work feeling nourished. We engage in somatic practices to find quiet, connection, and rootedness. We hope these circles nourish our community with tools to stay centered when urgency and crisis are swirling all around us.
We are working in the lineage of Joanna Macy, and Kritee Kanko, who teach us that we need to process grief in community so that we can hold one another through times like these.
The Vigil for Great Salt Lake is a 7 week long grief ritual, which oscillates between mourning (Walk the Waves) & praise (Celebrate the Species).
