Vigil for Great Salt Lake
Join us for the annual Vigil for Great Salt Lake, a 7 week long demonstration of grief, love, praise, and lament.
Since 2022, we have kept vigil on behalf of Great Salt Lake. The idea behind this vigil is, when someone you love is sick, you stay with them. We keep vigil for the lake the way you would keep vigil at the bedside of a sick or dying grandparent. We make offerings of presence, poetry, songs, stories, laughter, and tears.
We will keep vigil at the state capitol building for 7 weeks, throughout the Utah state legislative session. The vigil will commence with a jubilant opening day on January 19. After that, Celebrate the Species with us every Friday at 5 pm from January 22 to March 5. Walk the Waves with us every Monday at 8 am from January 18 to March 1 at the capitol building

Why keep vigil?
Celebration is resistance. Joy is resistance. Reverence is resistance.
We gather to bear witness. We gather to grieve. We gather to create the world we want to live in. We gather to express our love for brine shrimp, microbialites, and grebes. We gather to care for each other through spells of despair. We gather to revere all that is vital and alive.
Even as the collapse of our ecosystem challenges our understanding of hope, we devote ourselves to a future shaped by care, humility, and reciprocity. Everything we do matters. In the face of this crisis, who will we become?
